"Utopian/Dystopian Visions" Assignment

In groups of not more than four people you are to create and present a vision of Utopia or Dystopia using both text and visual media. Your creation must be compiled and presented in one of the following formats:

* power point * poster (see the side link on how to make an effective poster)
* movie * travel brochure/pamphlet * a blog spot (see me for help)
* your idea (please see me before beginning)
* 3D format with written essay

In creating your vision be sure to include aspects that tie to several of the themes we have discussed in class. For example, how will issues linked to housing, food, water and health be organized in your vision? What of equality and human rights? Gender relations? Power? Money? Education? Arts and culture? How will conflict be resolved or managed in your vision? What of the environment?

**You must include a minimum of four of these aforementioned elements.

*Also, link key quotes from your novels to support your vision. Consider the themes presented by the writers and respond in opposition or support of their apparent world views.

*Consider including a piece of music with or without lyrics to present as an intro or conclusion to your presentations.

Your projects will be evaluated with a combined mark from your peers and my self. Evaluation will be based on the presence of a clear message, depth of understanding of the themes explored, preparedness, visible effort, performance/presentation techniques and creativity. Please note that the written component of your project will be marked with the Quick Scale Rubric for Grade 11 Essays.

Rules & Laws: What is their role?

Martin Luther King once said: "Just as it is the duty of all men to obey just laws, so it is the duty of all men to disobey unjust laws". [Presumably he meant women too! ;)] It seems true that rules and laws play a pivotal role in maintaining some sense of social order. What if there were no laws? Would chaos unfold?
